Audubon's Rocky Mt. States Field Guide: A great buy
As with all of the National Audubon Society's field guides, the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Rocky Mountain States" is a most worthwhile purchase, perfect as a gift or for your own collection. The guide is durable and very portable, which makes it well suited for use in the outdoors. More importantly, it has excellent content. Despite its small size, the field guide contains a wealth of information. In addition to the usual focus on flora and fauna species, there is information on constellations, parks, ecosystems, and more. While the depth and detail of the information in the various sections is not vast, the breadth of subject matter more than makes up for this; the information presented is ideal for a general field guide. Moreover, the book is beautiful, filled with gorgeous color photographs. Residents of the Rocky Mountain states and non-residents will both love it.

National Geographic Atlas of Natural America

Author: National Geographic Society
Average review score:

Great book!
This book is great if you're looking for 1-2 page descriptions of plants, animals, trees, lakes, wildflowers, glaciers, canyons, mammals, fish, and deserts of parks in North America. The pictures are wonderful. And there are many national forests, national parks, and national wildlife refuges listed in the book. The map at the beginning of the book clearly pinpoints where each of the parks are located.

National Geographic Grand Canyon National Park Arizona, USA: Trails Illustrated
Published in Paperback by Trails Illustrated (December, 1995)
Authors: Trails Illustrated Staff and Treasure Chest Books
Average review score:

A Great Planning Tool
This Trails Illustrated map is a great tool for initial planning of your adventure into the Grand Canyon's spectacular backcountry. The map covers Grand Canyon National Park backcountry in its entirety. Almost. But close enough for most. The 1:73,530 scale and 80' contour interval make this map of limited use for on trail use, but make useful for getting an overview of the canyon and a sense of your options.

This map is also packed with information useful for planning your Grand Canyon trip. Backcountry use areas, necessary for making a permit request, are designated on the map. So are camp sites, campgrounds, and water sources in the GC's backcountry.

Very handy.

National Geographic Guide to America's Outdoors: Far West
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (October, 2001)
Authors: Geoffrey O'Gara and Phil Schermeister
Average review score:

Gorgeously photographed with attention to detail
I have bought several of these National Geographic guides and they are all fabulous. The photography makes me want to start vacationing right away. I plan to visit many of the places in these guides when I retire in two years and I am very happy that I discovered these guides. One should not plan a trip to the great outdoors without reading these guides. The details of each site, such as hiking trails, are extremely useful. By the way, nobody can match Amazon for both price and service on these guides.

National Landmarks, America's Treasures: The National Park Foundation's Complete Guide to National Historic Landmarks
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1900)
Authors: S. Allen Chambers and Hillary Rodham-Clinton
Average review score:

Easy access to the National Historic Landmarks
Organized by state and then by county, this book offers an easy and quick way to find out about the properties that have been defined as our national landmarks. The pithy descriptions of each property are clever, articulate, and avoid formula writing, keeping the reader moving from one to another of the various entries. The photographs and occasional drawings are large and of high quality, providing a valuable complement to the text. In addition to the index by property name, there is a general index by subject matter, making it easy to find properties related by subject, regardless of location.

National Park Ranger: An American Icon
Published in Paperback by Roberts Rinehart Pub (July, 2003)
Authors: Charles R. Farabee and Fran P. Mainella
Average review score:

An Absolute Must for Fans of Our National Parks
The mission of the National Park Service to preserve and protect our natural and cultural resources for future generations. Charles Farabee's knowledge and experience is portrayed superbly in National Park Ranger: An American Icon. Farabee is able to make the reader feel like they've been transported back to the late 1800's where our earliest parks were protect by members of the U.S. Army. Farabee then takes the reader to when the park ranger comes onto the scene and beyond. The history of the park ranger is very romantic and makes the reader yearn to travel back in time.

The only "slight" disappoint was the forward by the current NPS Director, Fran Mainella. While I understand that having the current Director involved with this passage is the proper thing to do, I can only take her comments with a grain of salt as the current leadership of the NPS and Department of the Interior (Secretary Gale Norton) do not appear to fight for the best interest of the service nor the environment. By no means should you let this deter you from purchasing this book.

National Park Service: The Story Behind the Scenery (The Story Behind the Scenery)
Published in Hardcover by KC Publications (July, 1901)
Authors: Russel E Dickenson, William Penn Mott, Mary L. Van Camp, Horace M. Albright, and Russell E. Dickinson
Average review score:

History of the National Park Service
History of the National Park Service told first hand by three former Directors of the National Park Service.

Horace M. Albright who started with the Interior Department in 1913 and was Director of the National Park Service from 1929 to 1933.

Russell E. Dickenson who started with the National Park Service as a ranger in 1946 and was Director from 1980 to 1985.

William Penn Mott Jr who started with the National Park Service in 1933 and became Director in 1985.

Interesting reading from the first hand accounts of these three former Directors on the history of the National Park Service from the beginning to 1987.

This is a large format (9 x 12) soft bound book loaded with beautiful color photographs of the National Parks, Monuments and Historic Sites.

This is a great value for the money.

Terrific!
Really nice drawings, much more detail, interest and discussion than with regular coloring books. Nice write-ups about each park and a map of the US with parks located on it.
